Iconic Puutarhakatu Nightspot Could Lose Low Wing as City Weighs Zoning Change

The building at Puutarhakatu 21 has housed venues such as L.A. Garage, Panama, Onnela, Pulse, Tivoli, Tenderville and Twenty One over nearly 60 years. It currently hosts Viihdekeskus Crazy. Tamperelainen reported the potential demolition would erase decades of Tampere club history if the planning committee raises the issue at next Tuesday's meeting.

Under the zoning plan, the site's taller section would be preserved and could be raised by two floors. The low two‑storey wing on Puutarhakatu would be removed and replaced with a six‑storey block featuring an attic sauna, basement parking and a planted podium for residents' outdoor space.

Planners first published participation and reference materials in early 2019. Feedback criticised proposals to raise the existing structure, the siting of new buildings and the site's cultural value, and asked for lower new construction, retained driveway access to the neighbouring lot, and shared parking and waste arrangements for housing companies. If the planning committee approves the proposal, it would move to the city board and then to the council, and required implementation agreements would still need to be accepted.
