Earthworks Begin for Tampere's Third Station Platform; Service Expected Summer 2027

Earthworks for a new intermediate platform at Tampere railway station start in early April, with the third platform expected to be open to train traffic by summer 2027.

The new platform aims to ease chronic capacity pressures at the passenger yard. The yard currently has one side platform and two island platforms and frequently operates five tracks at once. At times two passenger trains must share a single track. Project manager Jetro Matilainen of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency says work will begin with earthworks; platform-bridge castings are planned for late this year, canopies will be installed in February–March, and the platform should be in service by summer 2027 at the latest.

The project includes new access routes, canopies for all platforms, new lifts and escalators and extensive surface renewals. Shafts for the lifts and escalators have already been cast, with installation due next summer. Kreate production manager Juuso Siuko says a separate carriage maintenance area at Naistenlahti will free space on the yard for passenger trains.

An alliance led by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and Kreate Oy is delivering the build, with the City of Tampere, Fintraffic Raide Oy and VR Group participating under separate agreements. All station works are scheduled to finish gradually by 2031.
