Roope Itälinna, Finland’s Young Artist of the Year 2026, opens his award exhibition at the Finlayson Weaving Halls on 31 October. The show runs through 10 January 2027 and will be staged there while the Tampere Art Museum undergoes renovation and new construction.

Itälinna’s paintings map conflicting emotional states, from loneliness and the search for connection to escapism and hedonism. They depict scenes ranging from intimate domestic interiors to neon-lit club spaces. Recurring motifs drawn from rave culture and club nightlife reflect the artist’s experience as a DJ and event organiser. Figures are often caught in coloured light and stage smoke.

His working method often starts from photographs he has taken. He transforms them through precise, time-intensive brushwork that pairs photorealistic portraiture with pared-down, abstract settings, creating charged, ambiguous moods.

Born in 1990 and based in Turku, Itälinna graduated from the Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences in 2019. He has shown work in Finland, the United States and Asia. The Tampere Art Museum’s Young Artist exhibition series highlights internationally significant visual artists aged 35 or under and aims to introduce new Finnish contemporary art to wider audiences. Staging Itälinna’s show in the historic Weaving Halls creates a dialogue between his subjects and the old factory setting.
