Community art projects across Tampere this autumn emphasise collaboration and the creative process, with artists working with schools, libraries, associations and early childhood centres to co-create exhibitions and events shaped by local needs.

The emphasis is on collaboration and the creative process as much as the finished pieces. Community art builds networks among schools, libraries, associations and early childhood centres, with programmes shaped by local needs and participant feedback, says Senior Coordinator Pia Keltti.

Across the city, artists are running a range of projects. In Haihara, Veera Hanhiniemi and Piritta Suominen are working with young people on street- and textile-based projects together with Icehearts. TIcAS Cultural Cooperative is hosting photography, creative writing and visual arts workshops at Hervake, culminating in the Hervanta Neighbourhood Concert in November. Multsu‑Peltsu will present a Favourite Place photography show and the Light in the Darkness community project, leading to a family event. BCEnsemble artists Milla and Petri Neuvonen are running recycled-material workshops and the INTERESTED! exhibition featuring Year 7 pupils.

The programme builds on the city's recent cultural support, including the selection of 15 operators for rent-free Meanwhile Use Spaces for arts earlier this summer the rent-free Meanwhile Use Spaces programme. It follows other community-based activity such as Anti‑Racism Week, which included neighbourhood events in Haihara Anti‑Racism Week this spring.
