Fintraffic centralises national road monitoring in Tampere and Helsinki after Turku centre closure

Fintraffic has centralised national road monitoring into two control centres in Tampere and Helsinki after closing its Turku centre, and automation is increasingly used to support operators.

Fintraffic will monitor traffic across Finland from two road traffic control centres in Tampere and Helsinki. They handle more than half a million reports each year from road users, authorities and hundreds of automatic sensors, YLE reports.

Road weather stations measure friction and the amount of snow and water on carriageways, Rossi says, while average speed measurements help trigger variable speed limits.

Automation can propose lower speed limits for operators to accept or reject, Jaatinen says. Future systems could push condition alerts to vehicles or even send steering commands to automated cars to guide them around crash detours.

Fintraffic closed its Turku road traffic control centre after a summer of preparations and has moved to a nationwide, dynamic model: both Tampere and Helsinki can now monitor any region. The change follows Fintraffic's earlier decision to close the Turku centre and shift monitoring duties to Tampere and Helsinki.

Staffing on shifts has been increased and local knowledge remains crucial, the agency says. Extensive training meant the switch affected road users and authorities only minimally, and eight of Turku's ten staff have taken new roles within the organisation.
