Glass-walled Vuores waste hub up for sale after pneumatic system shutdown

A striking glass-walled, 10-metre-high collection building now stands empty at the edge of Vuores' woods. The roughly 400–500 square metre station was put up for sale in August after the neighbourhood's pneumatic waste system closed in April 2026, Aamulehti reports.

The shutdown ended a 14-year experiment that began in 2012. Only about 2 percent of residents agreed to cover the system's costs, making it economically unsustainable under current waste-fee rules.

Together, the Vuores and Ranta‑Tampella pipeline projects used roughly €27 million, about €19 million of that for Vuores. Robert Peldán of law firm Borenius, acting as the company's receiver, said the collection station will be sold during the liquidation proceedings. He added that the timetable is as soon as possible, although there is no particular rush and there have been interested parties.

Dismantling of above-ground collection points began in early August. The underground pipes will remain in place for now. Ranta‑Tampella's pipeline system and collection station continue to operate normally.

In the short term, residents in Vuores will use street bins until permanent collection points are installed. Earlier reports said the system was wound down after costs climbed nearly €20 million in March, and that temporary street bins briefly overflowed after the change was implemented in May.
