Haihara opens free artist workspaces and community art projects in Kaukajärvi and Annala

According to the City of Tampere, Haihara Art Centre launched new autumn cultural pilots in September, offering free six-month workspaces to local artists and expanded community-art programmes that engage young people across Haihara, Kaukajärvi and Annala. The projects build on earlier neighbourhood-led community art initiatives this autumn that emphasised collaboration across Tampere and the city's June decision to award rent-free meanwhile spaces to cultural operators when 15 projects were selected.

Haihara's Cultural Interim Space opened in the former janitor’s apartment, giving local artists a cost-free place to work in exchange for public activities such as workshops, exhibitions and events. The first residents are visual artist and illustrator Saara Vallineva and puppet and shadow-theatre artist Tytti Marttila.

Community artists Piritta Suominen and Veera Hanhiniemi are expanding activity across Kaukajärvi and Annala, partnering with Tampere Icehearts to meet young people in their everyday environments. They are co-designing lightweight textile installations and painted plywood elements. The plan foresees a main woven, translucent fabric piece installed at Haihara, with smaller works placed around the neighbourhood, for example at bus stops. Street-art techniques and community light-art workshops will be used to illuminate and activate the pieces.

The projects aim to spark creative participation, strengthen inclusion and a sense of safety, and build longer-term collaboration between artists, residents, youth services and local associations. Works and activities will appear at events such as Haifest and Haihara Christmas. Autumn partners include Annala Youth Centre, Tampere Icehearts, the Pirkanmaa FinFami Huppu project, Messukylä parish, Vamos Tampere and area associations.
