Hervanta named Finland's 2026 District of the Year, celebrates with free cake and magic show
Hervanta will celebrate being named Finland’s District of the Year 2026 with free cake, coffee and a magic show at the Hervanta leisure centre on 28 August.
According to the City of Tampere, cake and coffee for 300 people will be served at Hervanta leisure centre on Friday, 28 August, to celebrate the neighbourhood being named Finland’s District of the Year 2026. The event runs 17:00–19:00 at Hervanta leisure centre, Lindforsinkatu 5.
Neighbourhood development coordinator Sini Lempinen credits Hervanta’s strength to its diverse, active community, with numerous associations, schools and groups that help residents find ways to participate and belong. The free programme includes cake and refreshments and a magic show by Taikuri Marko starting at 17:30. There will also be close-up magic, character balloons for children and a poetry workshop run by Sanataideyhdistys Yöstäjä ry, where participants will create a poem for Hervanta. Popular Hervanta canvas bags will be handed out while supplies last.
Organisers will present a new low-threshold meeting place due to open at the leisure centre later this autumn, coordinated by Setlementti Tampere ry. Jaakko Laurila, programme manager for the Kaikkien Tampere development programme, said the space will provide residents with an accessible place to meet, take part in activities and spend time together. The event is free, open to all and will follow safe space principles. Hervanta is one of the city’s focus areas in the 2026–2029 district development programme.
The honour comes amid increased resident engagement in local planning; more than 1,050 people attended Tampere Residents' Evenings this spring, including sessions in Hervanta where residents discussed local projects.
