Hervanta to get new combined school and daycare, construction set for March 2027

A combined school and daycare will be built at Ruovedenkatu 7 in Hervanta, with construction set to begin in March 2027 and the facility due to open in January 2029.

The project follows earlier plans to replace the old Kanjonin school the plan to replace Kanjonin school. The recently opened Ahvenisjärvi school will temporarily host some classes during construction the new Ahvenisjärvi school.

The new building will house a school for 525 pupils from pre-primary to sixth grade, plus a daycare for 200 children in ten groups. It will include special education, student-specific support, student health services and food and support facilities. About 132 staff are expected to work on the premises. While the building is erected, grades 0–2 will be taught at Ahvenisjärvi School and grades 3–6 at the University of Tampere Hervanta campus. The daycare will remain in its current location.

Implementation costs are estimated at 22.9 million excluding VAT. The city plans to seek a 26 million leasing limit for a 20-year lease; final costs will depend on actual building expenses and interest rates. Peab Oy has been chosen as the contractor and Tampereen Tilapalvelut Oy will manage the project. Final approval is pending from the city board.

Planners want the site to serve residents beyond school hours. The outdoor areas are being designed for multiuse in the evenings for residents and hobby groups, with attention to accessibility, safe routes and the needs of children of different ages. "This is not just a new building, but a shared meeting place for the North Hervanta area," Deputy Mayor Jaakko Mustakallio said, noting the aim of improving local services and community ties.
