Hervanta's 1,100-Pupil Ahvenisjärvi School Opens as Tampere Brings New and Upgraded Childcare Facilities Online

Ahvenisjärvi's new 1,100-pupil school in Hervanta opened in August. The city also brought several other new and renovated schools and daycare facilities into use this term, Tamperelainen reports.

The openings were listed in the city's August summary of new and renovated facilities the city's August list.

The Hervanta building replaces the old school and houses pre-primary and grades 1–9. It includes a large sports hall and a smaller multipurpose hall that local residents can use outside school hours. During construction the school operated from Tampere University’s Hervanta campus, Konetalo.

Ruusutarha daycare, housed in the former Hatanpään Jukola building dating from 1917 and once converted for hospital use, has completed renovation and provides 140 places across seven groups. It initially serves as temporary premises for Koivistonkylä daycare while a new facility is built. Kanjoni is being rebuilt, and pupils will move to Konetalo and Ahvenisjärvi during the work. The Kanjoni daycare will remain in its current location. Private service-voucher daycare Sunshine Hervantajärvi opened in August 2026.

Several larger renovations are also under way. Turtola daycare moved to temporary premises on Sairaalankatu in August 2025. A new 80-place daycare will open in August 2027, and the old building will be demolished. Aleksanterin school's three-building renovation runs until August 2027; about 550 pupils are being taught at Eteläpuisto facilities and at Pyynikintie 2 during the works. Wivi Lönn school is receiving technical and interior upgrades and accessibility improvements. The work aims to respect the historical value of its 1875, 1886 and 1904 buildings. Harju's three-building overhaul began in summer 2025. Part of the student body has moved to temporary facilities on the school field, and the site is being planned for roughly 285 pupils under building-protection requirements.
