Tampere advances plan for 100-child Järvensivu daycare and revival of wooden school buildings

The City of Tampere says a needs assessment for a new daycare and the renovation of two wooden school buildings in Järvensivu is advancing. The plan would provide space for 100 daycare children, about 25 pre‑primary pupils and roughly 50 pupils in grades 1–2.

The assessment follows the city's zoning proposal for the site, which opened for public comment on 21 October when the zoning plan was displayed for feedback.

If the housing and real estate committee approves the assessment at its Thursday meeting, the project will enter planning, with a decision on the project plan scheduled for May 2027. The city estimates the work will cost about €12.2 million. Construction is slated to begin in October 2028, with the facilities ready for use in August 2030.

"Families in Järvensivu have waited a long time for the school to return to the area. The needs assessment moves the plan forward as hoped. The goal is that in future children can attend daycare, pre‑primary and their first school years close to home, and the old wooden schools will return to use for children and other area residents," says Deputy Mayor for Education Services Anne‑Mari Jussila.

Järvensivu school closed in 2017. Pupils currently attend classes at Sammon koulutalo, and pre‑primary education is held on Sairaalankatu. The daycare operates from rented premises until the new building is completed. A simultaneous zoning plan amendment aims to allow the new daycare while protecting the cultural and historical values of the old school buildings; approval is targeted for the end of 2026.
