Irjalankatu upgrades enter final stage as intersection work set for October

Major works on Irjalankatu are entering their finishing phase this autumn. The City of Tampere says the first reconstructed section, covering the stretches between Takahuhdintie and Loutunkatu and between Irjalankuja and Varsankatu, will be completed during the season, with intersection work due in October.

Over the past year crews renewed drinking water, wastewater and stormwater networks and built new property connections on the renovated sections. They also upgraded backbone water mains and improved property service connections between Loutunkatu and Irjalankuja. Base asphalt is due to begin the week of 21 September 2026 on the Takahuhdintie–Loutunkatu segment.

Temporary asphalt speed bumps will be installed at intersections this autumn. They will be replaced next summer by the concrete elements specified in the original street plan.

Work on the Sammon Valtatie–Varsankatu section will finish this autumn, and the Irjalankatu rehabilitation will then move into a second phase under the city's construction programme covering Varsankatu–Teiskontie. Tampereen Infra Oy was the contractor. The work included space for power and telecom cabling and new ducts to reduce the need to reopen streets. Shared construction also enabled stormwater management upgrades and several drainage renovations. Residents have praised the project's regular communications and map-based traffic guidance during the works.
