Puutarhakatu Reopens After Major Utility Upgrades; Celebration Set for 4 November 2026
According to the City of Tampere, renovation work on Puutarhakatu is complete after upgrades to utilities and streetscapes; the city will mark completion on 4 November 2026.
According to the City of Tampere, work on Puutarhakatu began in March 2025 to replace worn water and sewer pipes and renew electrical and telecommunications networks. It is now finished, and the city will celebrate completion on 4 November 2026.
The project upgraded underground infrastructure and added district cooling. The northern side was widened into a two-way bicycle path, and pavements were installed on both sides; motor vehicles still use the street as a one-way road. Stormwater management and street lighting were improved. New parking for cars, bicycles and electric scooters was introduced, and loading spaces were created. More street trees and planting areas were added.
The work was carried out as part of the Tampere City Centre 2040 programme to avoid repeated digging of the street. The city piloted a roadworks committee made up of residents, entrepreneurs and street users to reduce disruption. Mikko Siiro, a construction engineer at the City of Tampere, said the committee produced encouraging feedback and helped steer on-site arrangements and communications. Earlier coverage placed the project in the wider city-centre construction schedule and reported previous traffic changes on Puutarhakatu.
