A Pirkanmaa district court has sentenced 40-year-old Markus Vjatseslav Tervola to life in prison for killing a man at the victim’s home in Sastamala on 1 August after the attack was reclassified as murder due to its brutality.
According to YLE, a Pirkanmaa district court has sentenced 40-year-old Markus Vjatseslav Tervola to life imprisonment for the killing of a man at the victim’s home in Sastamala on 1 August. The sentence follows prosecutors’ earlier request for a life term when prosecutors sought a life sentence and comes after the incident was reclassified as murder due to the attack’s brutality when investigators described the attack as especially brutal.
Prosecutors said Tervola carried out extremely violent, prolonged attacks, hitting and kicking the victim and striking him with an electric guitar, with blows aimed at the head and torso. They argued the violence was so sustained it showed a determined intent to kill and caused the victim significant pain because death did not come quickly.
Tervola denies the killing, saying he was present but intoxicated and had passed out. The court concluded the prosecution’s account was supported by a forensic pathologist’s report and evidence gathered in the technical investigation, described the act as particularly brutal and cruel, and ruled it met the legal criteria for murder.
He will also lose his military rank and must pay compensation to the victim’s relatives. Tervola has been held in custody since early August and remains detained. The decision can be appealed.
