Commuting from the Tampere region is on the rise as more residents take jobs outside the area. A new YLE analysis of Statistics Finland data examines commuting and employment in 2024.
It found 22,424 employed residents left the Tampere region for jobs elsewhere in Finland in 2024, while 22,649 people commuted into the region from other municipalities. The Helsinki metropolitan area remains the most common destination for outbound commuters; Turku and Jyväskylä have also become noticeably more popular than in earlier years.
Within the region, the largest daily flows run from Kangasala, Ylöjärvi and Nokia toward Tampere. Commuting from Kangasala and Nokia to Tampere has grown markedly between 2010 and 2024.
The Tampere urban region covers Tampere and seven surrounding municipalities: Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Orivesi, Pirkkala, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi. The figures are based on registered workplace and residence, so remote work from home is not captured.
