Leaving Tampere: single-family homes and extra space draw residents to neighbouring towns
The City of Tampere says a June 2026 phone survey found most people who recently moved from Tampere to neighbouring municipalities did so to find a more suitable home, especially single-family houses and larger apartments.
The City of Tampere says a June 2026 phone survey of 277 recent movers found the primary reason people left Tampere for neighbouring municipalities was to find a more suitable home. Ninety-four percent said locating a suitable apartment, housing form or plot influenced their move at least somewhat, and 88 percent said it was a significant factor. Space mattered.
Many movers were looking specifically for single-family houses and larger apartments. New communities often matched families' needs better. Respondents cited pleasant residential environments and easier everyday life as key factors. Ties to Tampere remained strong: 73 percent said they might consider moving back, only 7 percent ruled it out, and the city's Net Promoter Score stood at +46.
The research was carried out by Bondata Research Oy for the City of Tampere's sustainable housing and construction unit. City officials say the results will feed into zoning and plot allocation work, and Jaakko Mustakallio, chair of the housing and real estate committee and deputy mayor, says the findings underline the need to steer larger family apartments toward households with children.
