Remote Work Drives 8,002 Tampere Residents to Commute to Helsinki in 2024
Outbound commuting from the Tampere region rose in 2024, with 8,002 residents travelling to the Helsinki region, and total outbound and inbound flows nearly equal at about 22,500 each.
Commuting out of the Tampere region to jobs elsewhere in Finland increased in 2024, with the Helsinki metropolitan area a particularly strong destination. Outbound and inbound commuting were nearly equal: 22,424 Tampere residents worked in other Finnish municipalities while 22,659 people commuted into the Tampere region.
Jussi Välimäki, a regional data manager, said the rise was most pronounced between 2019 and 2024. He suggested the spread of remote work has lowered the threshold for taking jobs outside one's home municipality. The single biggest outbound flow went to the Helsinki region, with 8,002 Tampere-area residents commuting there in 2024, about 4,100 more than in 2010. Travel to Jyväskylä and Turku has also increased.
Inbound commuting comes mainly from nearby towns such as Valkeakoski, Akaa, Hämeenkyrö and Sastamala. Roughly 21–24 percent of workers in Valkeakoski, Akaa and Hämeenkyrö hold jobs in Tampere.
Deputy mayor Jaakko Mustakallio said a return to the office after the pandemic-era remote period could reshape these flows. He added that fast connections to Helsinki are important for retaining residents because many highly educated jobs are concentrated there.
Tampere remains the main workplace for surrounding municipalities, especially Kangasala, Ylöjärvi and Nokia, even as the region's job self-sufficiency fell by 1.7 percentage points between 2010 and 2024. Pirkkala is a notable exception, with growing local job capacity.
The trend comes amid wider population shifts, including a city survey showing many movers left Tampere for larger homes in neighbouring towns the city's survey.
