Tampere to Add Over 3,000 Residents After Summer Migration and Baby Boom

According to the City of Tampere, Tampere is expected to grow by more than 3,000 residents this year. After a quieter start, driven largely by a slowdown in net migration, the city's population trend turned positive in July.

International inflows eased and departures increased earlier in the year, holding back growth. Municipal migration picked up over the summer, with Tampere recording its largest July and August gains of the 2020s. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen said the city remains one of Finland's fastest-growing urban areas and continues to attract new residents.

Natural population change improved as births exceeded deaths from June onward, following an unusually strong birth period between May and August. From January to August, municipal net migration rose to about 1,100 residents. At the end of August, the Tampere city region's preliminary population stood at 430,484, up 2,735, leaving the region's net growth at roughly 500 people and underscoring Tampere's expansion on a national scale.

This rebound follows earlier reports of a midyear population dip and slowed annual growth: a midyear population drop and slower growth figures reported in mid‑September.
