A free, daylong multicultural festival will fill Laikunlava and Library Park with music, street food and dance at the start of summer in Tampere.

According to the City of Tampere, at the start of summer Tampere will host a free, daylong multicultural festival that fills Laikunlava and Library Park with music, food and dance.

The event showcases Tampere’s everyday multicultural life with a programme that mixes international influences and local talent. Visitors can sample street food from Nepal and Ethiopia, Mexico and the Middle East. They can also browse stalls run by associations and craftspeople and find multilingual theatre and workshops for children at the Children's Culture Centre Rulla. Jaakko Laurila, programme manager for the Kaikkien Tampere development programme, called the festival “a great platform to showcase Tampere expertise and the range of cultures” and said such events help build a city for everyone.

Onstage highlights include Indaba, a high-energy ensemble combining multi-instrumental performance, breakdance and multilingual storytelling; 67 x Naked, a performative jazz group; and Sounds of South America, a line-up of musicians from Argentina, Chile, Cuba and Finland. Also on the bill are Sankalana Dance Club, IX:UNE Dance Crew and DJ Dr. Smedji Secer. The day ends with a free afterparty at G Livelab featuring soul singer Emilia Sisco, DJ Dr. Smedji Secer and host Suna Mikkola. The festival is organised by Tampere’s urban culture unit together with the Kaikkien Tampere development programme and G Livelab.
