Two sold-out festivals – Blockfest at Ratina and the indie Festivaali on the Pyynikki ridge – are taking place within two kilometres of each other in Tampere this weekend.

YLE reports that two completely sold-out festivals are taking place within two kilometres of each other in Tampere this weekend: the urban Blockfest at Ratina and the indie-leaning Festivaali on the Pyynikki ridge.

Earlier coverage placed the events in the context of the packed festival weekend in Tampere and cited organisers' estimate of about 80,000 visitors at Ratina for Blockfest.

The events could not be more different. Blockfest, founded in 2008, fills Ratina with hip-hop and rap, featuring US headliners alongside Finnish acts such as Melo and Ibe, and typically attracts around 80,000 visitors. It's big, loud and urban. Festivaali is intentionally smaller, with roughly 10,000 tickets available. Its programme features only domestic artists, many represented by Alt agency, including Arppa, Lyyti and Maustetytöt.

Organisers and attendees point to differences in setting, music, on-site activities and crowd fashion. Blockfest visitors favour streetwear and cocktail buckets. Festivaali-goers dress for cooler evenings, browse local restaurant stalls and buy rain ponchos and long-sleeve festival shirts.

Attendees told YLE they generally preferred one festival over the other and were not upset by the overlap. Police working with Blockfest organisers reported a calm Friday despite heavy footfall, and the broadcaster is streaming 13 domestic Blockfest performances live on Yle Areena and YouTube.
