Over 200 candidates to contest Tampere parish elections in November

The parish contests will feature 208 candidates vying for parish council seats and 197 for the shared church council, Aamulehti reports.

Nominations closed on 15 September. Coverage noted candidates must be confirmed church members and that Tampere has more than 125,000 eligible voters the parish nominations story. The age range among candidates runs from 23 to 82 generation‑spanning candidacies.

There are 123 seats at stake: 72 in the five parish councils and 51 in the joint church council. The five Evangelical Lutheran parishes in Tampere are Southern Parish, Harju, Messukylä, Tampere Cathedral Parish and the Swedish parish; together they form the Tampere parish union. In the Swedish-speaking parish the number of candidates matches the available seats: eight for the parish council and two for the joint council.

Several electoral groups have fielded candidates across the Finnish-language parishes, including Church for All, Kirkkodemarit with independents, National Coalition Party lists and a United Parish community. Messukylä also has a new list, Church of Encounter, and Living Church is running candidates there. Advance voting runs from 3 to 7 November, with the main vote on 15 November. Voting is open to all church members aged over 16. An online candidate guide opens on 7 October on the Tampere parish union website.
