Tampere seeks candidates for Nuva youth council, voting set for November
Tampere is inviting secondary and upper-secondary students to run in September for Nuva youth council elections; voting will be held at schools, online throughout November and in person on 25 November.
The City of Tampere is inviting candidates throughout September for elections to Nuva, the youth council that represents secondary and upper-secondary students in city decision-making. Nuva has 40 members who serve two-year terms and work to promote youth interests in municipal affairs.
Prospective candidates born in 2008–2013 and living or studying in Tampere can apply using an online form. No prior activism is required; applicants need only interest and a willingness to commit, youth instructor Jenna Naukkarinen says.
Voting is open to the same age group and will take place at schools during the school day. There will also be an in-person session at the youth culture centre Monitoimitalo 13 on 25 November from 17:00 to 19:00, and an electronic voting platform will be available throughout November.
Current council members encourage a diverse pool of applicants, noting the council builds practical democracy skills, new friendships and real influence over city decisions. One member of the communications team recalled the powerful feeling of many youths backing an initiative, proof that participating can make opinions count.
The elections follow the city's 'Listen to Youth' campaign launched in August to encourage adults to check in with teenagers.
