From 28 October, Pirkanmaa will introduce winter and dark-time speed limits, cutting many motorways to 100 km/h and main roads to 80 km/h to reduce deer collisions and improve safety.

Pirkanmaa will introduce winter and dark-time speed limits on 28 October, lowering many motorway limits to 100 km/h and main roads to 80 km/h, Tamperelainen reports.

Speed limit signs will be switched by 30 October, and the new limits take effect as soon as the signs are in place. Drivers should notice the changes quickly.

During the winter period motorways will generally have a 100 km/h limit, while main roads will be set at 80 km/h. The reductions are aimed at improving safety in darkness and on slippery roads and at lowering the risks posed by large game. Pirkanmaa has a high population of white-tailed deer, and about one third of the region’s deer collisions happen in October and November.

The change follows a split vote that delayed other planned local speed-limit cuts in late September, and it comes amid a recent rise in large-game collisions in the region reported in September.
