Tampere Committee Pauses Proposed 70 km/h to 50 km/h Cut on Hervannan Valtaväylä
A municipal committee has paused plans to lower the speed limit on Hervannan valtaväylä from 70 km/h to 50 km/h and sent the proposal back for further study.
This week the municipal committee paused plans to cut speeds on Hervannan valtaväylä and sent them back for further study, a move that could delay the safety-driven change, YLE reported.
In April the city’s planning manager proposed lowering the limit from 70 km/h to 50 km/h between Messukyläntie and the junctions with Sotilaankatu and Nekalantie. Safety was the main argument. Deputy Mayor Ilkka Porttikivi moved to send the plan back for further preparation, saying he had urged colleagues not to get hung up on small details but that the issue had nevertheless ballooned into a larger debate. The committee used its right to call in the administrative decision, voting 10–3 to request more analysis on whether a 20 km/h cut would improve safety or instead create new hazards. Porttikivi warned a nearby speed camera could even push drivers to slow to about 40 km/h.
A previous speed cut after the Messukylä junction toward the Prisma did not produce the clear safety gains expected, city officials said, so the committee wants solid evidence before changing limits on this main arterial. Because of summer vacations, the matter is likely to be postponed until autumn while the city prepares a more detailed report.
