Split vote delays speed-limit cuts on Teiskontie and Tampereen valtatie

Tampere's urban environment committee used its right at the 15 September meeting to take back three official decisions on speed limit reductions, delaying planned cuts on several main roads including Teiskontie and Tampereen valtatie, YLE reported.

The disputed decision, signed by city planning manager Ari Vandell, would have lowered limits from 50 to 40 km/h on Teiskontie (between Kalevan puistotie and Uimalankatu) and on Tampereen valtatie (between Hatanpään valtatie and Lempääläntie). The committee voted 4–7. It sent the matter back for further preparation and will reconsider it at the 29 September meeting. Acting chair Antti Ivanoff said the move aims to secure more detailed justifications from officials and to assess the effects on commuter traffic.

This is not the first time the committee has paused such a plan. In May it stopped a proposed reduction on Hervanta's main thoroughfare from 70 to 50 km/h, a proposal that has not progressed when it delayed the Hervannan valtaväylä cut. Deputy mayor Ilkka Porttikivi defended the officials' reasoning and urged the committee to avoid repeated interventions. Ivanoff said clearer limits and discussion may be needed around delegation of decision-making to officials.
