Pirkanmaa Welfare Area will buy Tampere’s Central Fire Station on Satakunnankatu from the city for €6,662,500 and keep it as a downtown base for rescue services.

Pirkanmaa Welfare Area has approved buying the Central Fire Station on Satakunnankatu from the City of Tampere for €6,662,500, keeping the station as a downtown base for rescue services. The sale was discussed at last week's online council meeting, Tamperelainen reports.

The decision comes as a new rescue and emergency medical services station in Nekala is due to open at the end of the year. Some duties will shift there once it opens. Legally mandated rescue services will continue at the Central Fire Station to ensure coverage of Tampere city centre; officials consider the building a necessary part of the regional service network. The sale follows earlier plans to expand the city's rescue network, including the Nekala station previously scheduled by the city.

A major renovation is planned for the station. During the upgrade, operations will continue in a neighbouring extension leased from the city. That temporary wing is scheduled to be demolished after the project is completed.
