Poor Ticket Sales Put 750‑Seat Shows at Tomaatteja! Festival at Risk

Festival director Johanna Tohni says ticket sales for the Tomaatteja! comedy festival in Tampere are far below normal: the three biggest Komediateatteri shows (about 750 seats each) remain largely unsold, roughly 1,000 tickets behind last year.

Festival director Johanna Tohni told Tamperelainen the situation is dire: "Our biggest shows are still completely stuck." Tamperelainen reports that Tomaatteja! Tomaatteja! in Tampere, set for May 20–23, is facing a serious ticket slump with many seats at the event's largest Komediateatteri performances still unsold less than two weeks before opening.

The long-running comedy festival brings 60 comedians together across 13 shows. While smaller events have sold reasonably, the three largest summer-theatre performances — each in the Komediateatteri space that holds about 750 people — are lagging.

Organizers have kept prices low and trimmed some fares. Still, sales are roughly 1,000 tickets behind last year — about a third of the typical take, Tohni estimates. She blames a calendar shift from January to late May, the loss of the Tornissa venue and stiff competition from high-profile events. Tighter revenues will squeeze promotion budgets, she warns, but she expects the festival to continue.
