Pyynikki Doughnut Café Quintuples Kitchen Space, Launches 'Munkkimobiili' Van on May Day
The Pyynikki doughnut café will expand its kitchen from about 10 m² by roughly 40 m² and launch a mobile sales van, Munkkimobiili, on May Day to boost production and add a second sales point.
The Pyynikki doughnut café at the Pyynikki observation tower will roughly quintuple its kitchen space and debut a mobile sales van on May Day.
The café has leased the tower's western wing, a space used since 1977 by the Tampere Radio Amateurs association OH3NE, adding about 40 square metres to the current roughly 10 m² kitchen. Owners Karkki and Jaro Suoste say the larger kitchen will allow much higher production, provide a reliable second sales point and create more humane working conditions. On a busy July day they have baked more than 1,000 doughnuts; with the new facilities, they expect production could at least triple.
The new mobile unit, named Munkkimobiili, will open on May Day. It will offer a limited menu of doughnuts, coffee, cold drinks and two new items — an iced coffee frappe and bubble tea. Full daily service is planned once the kitchen renovation is finished.
The tower yard has been rearranged. An ice cream kiosk has moved next to the Munkkimobiili. The café — founded decades ago by Eva Suoste — has operated a second outlet in Tampere Market Hall since spring 2020.
The observation tower itself dates back to 1929, after an earlier wooden structure from 1888 was destroyed in 1918.
