Rahola parents warn temporary school move would send 300 pupils onto dangerous routes
Parents in Rahola warn the city’s plan to move about 300 pupils to temporary sites in Hyhky or Harju for renovations would force children onto dangerous multi‑kilometre routes from August 2027.
Tamperelainen reports that the city's plan to relocate Rahola school for renovation will push pupils onto dangerous, multi‑kilometre routes from August 2027. The proposal follows the city's earlier plan to move Rahola pupils to a temporary site in Hyhky in August 2027 while the school is renovated.
About 300 pupils in pre‑school and grades 1–6, plus children receiving special education, would be moved into temporary facilities in Hyhky or Harju. Parents warn the longer journeys, many adding 3–5 kilometres to daily travel, cross busy roads and a high‑traffic roundabout they call a "death trap." They propose shared transport from Rahola, phased renovation so some children could remain at their home school, and universal free bus passes for all displaced pupils.
Deputy Mayor for Education Anne‑Mari Jussila said officials are studying a compromise: send the youngest pupils to Harju and older primary pupils to Hyhky. Traffic calming measures will be examined. She rejected blanket free season tickets and phased construction on cost and practical grounds. A final decision is due in early 2027. Pupils would move into temporary facilities in August 2027 and the renovation is scheduled to finish by the end of 2029.
Parents are holding an open discussion at Rahola school on Monday 9 November at 17:30 and have invited local decision‑makers.
