According to the City of Tampere, Rahola school will move to a temporary site in Hyhky in August 2027 while its building undergoes a full renovation, with the school due to reopen in January 2030.
The move will be phased. A portable pre-primary building on the Rahola site was taken out of use in summer 2026 and pre-primary groups moved into the main school building; in early August 2026 fifth graders were transferred to Hyhky. The Hyhky site is about four kilometres from Rahola. The route includes lit pedestrian paths, crosswalks and direct public transport without a bus change. No separate shuttle services are planned. The city may grant school travel allowance on a case-by-case basis if a pupil’s journey exceeds five kilometres, based on a guardian’s application.
Officials will study alternative arrangements for pre-primary and early primary pupils during 2026, including using the Harju school building, and will assess effects on travel, teaching and facilities. Deputy Mayor for Educational Services Anne-Mari Jussila said the safe journey to school for small children is the city's main priority and that officials will examine how the genuine local school principle can be realised and whether the early grades' temporary site could be closer than Hyhky, with decisions made in dialogue with guardians. The city aims to finalise the temporary arrangements package in early 2027.
The relocation is part of wider school renovation and service network work, following the recent opening of the Ahvenisjärvi school in Hervanta and the 2026–2040 service network plan.
