Thousands of lamps will light Tampere’s Tallipiha on Oct 9–10 and Oct 16–17, 6–10 pm each evening, when the popular Dim Hours autumn event returns and is expected to draw large crowds and long queues.

Expect crowded streets and long queues when Tallipiha is illuminated by thousands of lamps on Oct 9–10 and Oct 16–17, 6–10 pm each evening, Aamulehti reports. The return of the autumn light show is likely to draw heavy foot traffic across the Finlayson area.

Dim Hours will again fill the cobbled yards of Tallipiha with lanterns, candles and decorative lighting on Friday and Saturday nights. Area coordinator Tarja Lintunen says the format will follow last year’s layout, while shops plan some new artistic decorations. Live music will be provided by troubadour Henry Johan. A group exhibition, Dark Waters / Bright Lights, will feature work by Henna Videnoja, Julianna Saarela, Utu Korhonen, Anastasia Glustsenko and Minttu Nurmi.

Organisers say they cannot add extra dates because the event ties up significant resources for local businesses and last year’s popularity created queues that sometimes blocked shop entrances and driveways. To ease congestion, more food stalls have been added this year. Visitors are asked to come on foot or by public transport and to avoid driving into Tallipiha or the wider Finlayson area, as the Plevna car park is under renovation and could worsen pedestrian bottlenecks. Many of the decorative lights will remain in place after the event, allowing people to enjoy them later.

Dim Hours joins other autumn light events in Tampere, such as the Valopolku light trail, and comes ahead of the city’s larger Festival of Lights opening on Oct 23.
