Tampere approves plan to relocate shunting yard and free land for dense, green housing
Tampere city council approved a programme to free up land south of the city centre for dense, green housing and better public-transport links, including plans to relocate the shunting yard and plan new tram and station connections.
The City of Tampere says the city council this week approved a programme to free up land south of the city centre for dense, green housing and improved transport links. The decision launches a long-term southern growth programme that will steer development along public-transport corridors and prepare the area for major change over the coming decades.
A central goal is to relocate the city's shunting yard to a site designated in the regional plan, freeing a large tract of land for a greener, more walkable neighbourhood. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen said the city has long combined long-term vision with the willingness to push major projects forward, citing the tram as an example. The yard move is expected to take decades and will involve cooperation with the state and neighbouring municipalities.
The programme's initial phases will study development options for the yard area before relocation and advance planning for Lakalaiva station, the Vuores tram branch and other transport nodes. It also includes early steps for the Lokomo area. Work will stretch to 2060.
The southern phase master plan area runs from Viinikanoja in the north to Lakalaiva in the south. Its participation and assessment plan will be on display 2 April–4 May 2026, and a public presentation is scheduled for 16 April at Siluetti, Tampere Bus Station. Phase master plan work is due for approval procedures by the end of 2028. The programme joins other ongoing efforts such as the Viiden tähden keskusta (Five-Star City Centre) and Hiedanranta programmes.
