Tampere-area parents back 11 August start for 2027–28 school year
Schools in the Tampere area will begin the 2027–2028 school year on Wednesday 11 August 2027 after a guardians' survey found majority support for a later August start.
According to the City of Tampere, schools in the Tampere area will begin the 2027–2028 school year on Wednesday 11 August 2027.
A joint survey of guardians carried out in August–September 2026 drew 8,909 responses from eight municipalities in the Tampere sub-region. Fifty-three percent backed the 11 August start after urging a later August start.
Deputy Mayor for Education Services Anne‑Mari Jussila said parents' message was clear: a later start lets families make full use of the summer holiday.
Autumn break will be in week 42. Winter break will be in week 9. The Christmas holiday will run from 23 December 2027 to 9 January 2028. The school year will end on Saturday 3 June 2028.
On 27 October 2026 the education committee replaced a 2024 decision for the 2027–2028 year. Tampere-area municipalities are coordinating work and holiday times to keep the regional timetable as uniform as possible to support family life and schooling.
