Nearly 9,000 parents across eight municipalities urged a later August start and a Christmas break from 23 December to 9 January, prompting Tampere to revise its pre- and basic education calendar for 2027–2028. The proposed autumn term would begin on Wednesday 11 August 2027, Tamperelainen reports.

Earlier proposals had set the autumn term to run 9 August–21 December 2027 and the spring term 10 January–3 June 2028, but the regional guardian survey produced strong support for the later dates and specific holiday timing. The consultation highlighted three main concerns: the timing of the autumn term, the length of the Christmas holiday and the placement of the Easter break. It follows a city guardian survey, which also found most parents wanted a later August start.

More than half of respondents said they want schools to begin as late in August as possible in future years. Opinion on the length of the Easter holiday was split, though a Thursday-to-Monday break attracted the most backing. City planners say the timetable will be adjusted only after weighing teaching requirements, staff impacts and how services can be implemented.
