Tampere Parents Praise After-School Safety and Staff, Seek Clearer Communication
A City of Tampere survey carried out 19 January–1 February 2026 found nearly 85 percent of guardians are satisfied with the city's after-school activities, praising safety and staff while asking for clearer communication and more planned activities.
A City of Tampere survey carried out 19 January–1 February 2026 found nearly 85 percent of guardians are satisfied with the city's after-school activities. 581 parents responded; most reported children in first grade and about a quarter in second grade.
Parents singled out a safe daily routine, the children's well-being and smooth cooperation with families as the programme's strengths. They also praised staff professionalism and warm interaction.
Respondents asked for clearer communication about exceptional situations and more consistent use of channels across locations. Many want more planned activities, such as guided physical exercise and workshops.
Head of Basic Education Mari Palviainen thanked guardians for responding, saying feedback is extremely important for developing operations. "For the next school year, our goals will be to focus on physical activity, outdoor recreation, and the development of common communication practices. We don’t need any screen time at all in the afternoon activities," she said.
Applications for places in the 2026–2027 school year will be accepted 1–22 April 2026 via Wilma. Places are available for pupils in grades 1–2 and students in special education classes who meet the necessary need criteria.
The city organises after-school activities alongside private providers, funding and monitoring quality while granting places on a yearly basis.
