Tampere cancels night market leases as vendors appeal

Tampere has terminated all ongoing rental agreements for night market stalls, with current contracts set to expire at the end of March 2027. Future spots will be offered through open applications as two-year fixed-term contracts, a change intended to increase transparency and standardise how night-time sales locations are awarded across Koskipuisto, Jugendtor and Tullikamarin aukio, Tamperelainen reports.

Several vendors filed rectification requests seeking to overturn the terminations, but the Housing and Property Committee rejected all appeals on Thursday. JK Kioski oy, the Koskipuisto tenant since 2020, says it has operated at the site for ten years, invested in the location and employed staff, calling the decision unreasonable. The Koskipuisto lease began with Jawal Express in 2016. Tampereen Tähtigrilli oy has held the Jugendtor spot since early 2017. The Tullikamarin aukio stall, occupied by Express Omran for about ten years, will be removed at the end of 2026 because of construction and a related zoning project, and the square's ice cream kiosk will also be removed in 2026.
