Tampere city council held an evening workshop on respectful debate, debated several citizen initiatives including free menstrual products in schools and a proposed ban on face‑covering veils, and approved its 2027 meeting schedule.

Ahead of its next session on 19 October 2026, the city council held an evening workshop on respectful debate and interaction. Councillors then debated several citizen initiatives and approved the 2027 meeting schedule.

Proposals included providing free menstrual products in school toilets, boosting children's and young people's physical activity during the school day, and investigating whether the Ohjaamo service age limit should be raised to 35. Councillors also addressed an initiative to ban face‑covering veils and referred several new motions for further preparation.

The session was framed by the city's ethical operating principles and a councillor code of conduct, reflecting calls from council leadership and party groups to strengthen respectful and safe debate when views differ. Meetings can be watched live from the Järvi meeting room on the first floor of City Hall. Guided groups can arrange to view proceedings from the council chamber galleries by contacting valtuuston.sihteeristo(at)tampere.fi, and agendas and minutes are available on the council's website.

The workshop follows the decision to start Monday meetings with a 45‑minute conduct workshop at the renovated City Hall and earlier concerns about a strained debate culture. The council published the agenda and public access details in advance ahead of the meeting.
