Tampere delays school start to 11 August, giving students an extra week of summer
Tampere will start the 2027–28 school year on Wednesday 11 August 2027, moving the start a week later and giving pupils an extra week of summer holiday.
The city will start the 2027–28 autumn term on Wednesday 11 August 2027, moving the start of classes one week later than this year and extending the summer holiday into mid‑August. That gives students an extra week of summer.
The change follows an August–September 2026 survey of nearly 9,000 guardians across the Tampere city region in which 53 percent backed a later start, Tamperelainen reported. The education committee approved the adjustment on Tuesday.
Deputy Mayor for Educational Services Anne‑Mari Jussila said parents had sent a clear message that schools should start later in August, and that the later start allows families to make the most of the summer.
The school year will include an autumn break in week 42 and a winter break in week 9. Christmas holiday runs from 23 December 2027 to 9 January 2028, and the year ends on Saturday 3 June 2028, in line with the rest of Finland.
