Tampere Shares Third Place in GDS Supplier Ranking as Overall Score Rises to 86.35

According to Visit Tampere, Tampere has again been named among the world’s leading destinations in the 2026 Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, with its overall score rising to 86.35 and a strong showing in the Supplier category.

The Supplier ranking, in which Tampere shared third place, reflects commitments by local tourism, events and restaurant businesses to adopt sustainable practices. Visit Tampere pointed to support measures such as Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland program, the "Choose Responsibly" service and the organisation’s own training and advisory work for helping companies secure certifications and plan sustainability systematically. This is a notable achievement.

"Tampere’s total points rose from last year’s 85.76 to 86.35. That’s a great result and, although the overall ranking did not improve, we remain among the world’s top destinations and should be very proud of that. I want to thank the companies that have committed to sustainability work, the credit for the impressive shared third place in the Supplier category belongs to them," said Matti Pollari, Visit Tampere’s sustainable tourism development manager.

The GDS Index evaluates destinations across environmental performance, social sustainability, supplier responsibility and destination governance. In the mid-sized cities category Tampere placed fifth overall. Helsinki again won the overall comparison, underlining the strong position of Finnish cities in sustainable tourism. The result follows earlier recognition for Tampere’s environmental performance in an index that ranked the city among Europe’s top ten for clean air.
