Tampere Launches Anti-Racism Week Focusing on Safety

Aamulehti reports that Tampere will mark Anti‑Racism Week from March 16 to 22 with citywide cultural and community events and a new racism reporting channel. The week opens with Everyone's Sauna in the Tampere Swimming Centre conference room, and on Tuesday Residents' Night will take place at the Hervanta Leisure Centre to discuss equality and safety. The city will also unveil a racism reporting channel this summer, and attendees will have a chance to explore it and provide feedback during the events, with the week wrapping up in a panel at Arttel on Sunday, March 22.

The paper notes that the impetus for the week comes after a Red Cross–commissioned survey showing about 90 percent of Finns think addressing racism increases safety, while 85 percent have witnessed racism and fewer than half have intervened because the incident passed quickly or people were unsure how to act. The survey also finds that 15–24-year-olds are the most affected group, with 95 percent reporting experiences or observations of racism, largely online. Sanna Saarto of the Red Cross anti-racism program emphasizes that racism and discrimination exclude people from communities, and addressing them strengthens trust and builds a society where everyone can feel safe being who they are. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen notes that Tampere does not tolerate racism and aims to be a city where everyone can feel accepted and safe. The poll was conducted by Taloustutkimus for the Red Cross, with 1,179 respondents.
