Tampere residents need housing company approval to keep backyard chickens
Residents must get their housing company’s permission and any required official permits before keeping backyard chickens in Tampere; roosters are unlikely to be allowed because of their noisy morning calls.
Backyard chickens are allowed in housing company yards only after residents secure both company permission and any required official permits, Tamperelainen reports.
Jesse Niemi, a lawyer at Kiinteistöliitto Pirkanmaa ry, says housing company consent is needed before installing a coop. Even with that permission, keepers must register with the Finnish Food Authority, and municipal building supervision must confirm whether an animal shelter may be constructed on the plot. A rooster is unlikely to be approved because of its noisy early-morning calls. If all permits are in order, summer hens are possible even in urban yards. Short-term rentals of chickens for the season are already available to some people.
