Tampere Startup Agronomy Launches Wolt-Backed Service to Deliver Pirkanmaa Food in Under an Hour

Tampere-based startup Agronomy launched a Wolt-backed online shop in September promising to deliver locally produced food within an hour, YLE reports. The four-person company says the service will keep Pirkanmaa food in the region and boost farmers’ share of each euro going to producers.

Founded last year, Agronomy has recruited nearly twenty Pirkanmaa farms and is negotiating with more than 35 others. The founders, CEO Wasif Noor (28) and COO Petrus Poutanen (20), say the company has raised €60,000 and aims for 200 to 300 orders a month, with average baskets of €30 to €40. To cut costs it plans a small warehouse footprint and direct producer partnerships; Noor adds consumers will know where their food comes from and farmers will get a larger slice of the price.

Experts, however, urge caution. Arhi Kivilahti, a commerce professor at Turku University who has studied online grocery retail, warns the market structure and expensive last-mile logistics make the path difficult. He notes wholesalers and buying chains controlled by the big K- and S-groups raise costs, and estimates Finland may need dozens of local farms per city before such a model becomes broadly profitable.

Agronomy hopes Wolt’s delivery network can solve the last-mile challenge, while farms such as the 300-year-old Yrjölä berry farm see the service as a way to sustain winter sales and reach customers who cannot visit markets.
