Tampere to House 180 Hakametsä Students at Temporary Sammonkatu Campus in 2027

According to the City of Tampere, the city will open a temporary Hakametsä upper-secondary unit for 180 students at Tredu's Sammonkatu campus in autumn 2027.

The decision responds to a city plan to increase upper-secondary starting places and prevent admission cutoffs from rising as existing schools reach capacity. Planning for the permanent Hakametsä Sport Campus has been delayed by appeal processes. The city reviewed Tredu's space use and found parts of the Sammonkatu campus that can be repurposed with only minor renovations to host cohorts beginning in 2027. The temporary unit will operate under Sammon Central Upper Secondary School.

This follows earlier reporting that the city was scrambling to find temporary premises for about 100 new Hakametsä students after zoning delays the city's earlier scramble to house new students. Tredu's campus arrangements were also part of wider changes after Tredu announced moves of some workshops to the Nirva campus Tredu's planned workshop moves.

Deputy Mayor Jaakko Mustakallio, chair of the Board for Vitality and Competence, said the move addresses a severe shortage of upper-secondary places and helps keep access open for Tampere youth. He added the city aims to secure places across both upper-secondary and vocational education and will treat Tredu’s space solutions as part of broader campus development. City officials said the temporary arrangements will not affect the ongoing preparation of the Hakametsä Sport Campus, and the unit will relocate there once the campus is completed. Agendas and minutes of the Board for Vitality and Competence provide further details.
