Tampere to Plan Southern Growth to 2060
Tampere’s city executive board has approved a development programme guiding the city’s growth toward the south through 2060, centred on relocating the marshalling yard to free land for new urban districts such as Hatanpää and Lakalaiva.
Aamulehti reports that Tampere aims to grow towards the south, and the city’s executive board has approved a development programme whose targets run as far as 2060. The plan’s central goal is relocating the marshalling yard, which currently takes up space south of the city centre. In its place, the city wants to create a new, green and more comfortable urban area close to the centre.
According to Aamulehti, the programme focuses on construction areas including the Hatanpää and Lakalaiva districts, with implementation planned in cooperation between the state and municipalities in the Tampere region. The paper says the actual relocation is expected to happen only after several decades, but the first steps will include investigating development opportunities for the marshalling yard area in advance. The plan also covers planning for the Lakalaiva railway station area, a Vuores tram branch, and other transport nodes.
Aamulehti adds that the expansion of Tampere’s core toward the south is supported by the regional master plan, which backs strengthening regional accessibility, attractiveness and traffic functionality across Pirkanmaa. The executive board also decided to start work on a southern phase general plan and put the participation and assessment plan on public display, with the planned public consultation dates and presentation event later in April 2026.
