Tampereen Työväen Teatteri lands two spots on 2026 Thalia Award shortlist
Two of the seven productions shortlisted for the 2026 Thalia Award are Tampereen Työväen Teatteri shows or close collaborations, the Theatre Information Centre announced on 7 May.
Theatre Information Centre (TINFO) published the shortlist on 7 May, and ePressi reports that two of the seven finalists are Tampereen Työväen Teatteri productions or close collaborations.
One finalist is the company's own Kärpäset, written and directed by Sirkku Peltola; it premiered on 23 January 2025 on the Eino Salmelainen stage and features Aimo Räsänen, Martti Suosalo and Petra Ahola. The other, Itseen kirjoitettu, is a Teatteri Metamorfoosi production in which Tampereen Työväen Teatteri acted as a close production partner; it premiered on 20 February 2026 and ran on the same stage throughout the spring season.
Nina Lehtinen of Aamulehti, who sat on the five-member preliminary panel convened by TINFO, praised Kärpäset's handling of heavy themes and its theatrical craft. "Kärpäset deals with grief, death and failed encounters in a way that is possible only in theatre," she said. "Sirkku Peltola has distilled her theatrical art into a work that makes you gasp."
Rolf Bamberg, another panelist, called Itseen kirjoitettu a powerful, fast-paced staging of Didier Eribon's memoir adaptation that examines class origins, shame and the search for identity. He noted that three actors and a musician create an intense flow on stage, with moods shifting quickly from cold to warm and from bitterness to acceptance.
A five-journalist panel selected the seven finalists. The public will vote online from 7 to 20 May, and the winner will be announced at the opening of the Tampere Theatre Festival on 4 August. The prize aims to recognise productions that spark public debate, attract new audiences, achieve international success or otherwise show special merit; eligible premieres must have opened between 1 January 2025 and 26 April 2026.
