Sastamala has seen two suspected homicides this month. Prosecutors are now reviewing an August 1 death after police completed a preliminary investigation, YLE reports. Investigators described the attack as especially brutal, and the case was reclassified as murder in late September earlier reporting.
Authorities have identified two suspects in the August incident. Both were arrested on August 5, but only a 40-year-old remains jailed. The inquiry began as manslaughter and was upgraded to murder at the end of September; the file has been sent to prosecutors, who must decide whether to press charges by October 8. The detained men have prior convictions: the 40-year-old for drug-trade offences, and the 49-year-old for serious violence and repeated aggravated drunk driving.
A separate September 16 death in a private home is being investigated as manslaughter. Two people, a 55-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, were remanded on September 20. They were detained shortly after the incident when the arrests were made. The woman's record includes an upheld 2016 murder conviction for a 2014 fatal stabbing, and a health and danger assessment found her to be extremely dangerous. The man has previous prison sentences for aggravated robbery and a pharmacy burglary, a 2023 fine for assaults on elderly people, and multiple minor convictions for theft, doping and drug offences.
