Vacant Detached House Severely Damaged by Evening Fire on Järvensivuntie

Aamulehti reported that a vacant detached house on Järvensivuntie in Tampere’s Järvensivu district caught fire at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Pirkanmaa Rescue Department said crews found the building fully ablaze when they arrived. Ten rescue units responded, and the street was closed while police secured the scene.

Witness Timo Marttila said shortly before 6 p.m. that the roof was fully engulfed and smoke was drifting east. Gusty winds pushed large plumes of smoke across the neighbourhood. Several dozen people gathered nearby to watch and record the blaze. Rescue crews isolated the area and worked to extinguish the fire; the house was expected to be completely destroyed.

At 7 p.m., the rescue department said extinguishing work was ongoing and seven rescue units remained at the scene. The local paper Tamperelainen reported that by 10 p.m. the response was in its final stages, with an excavator on site and a couple of units still watering and clearing debris; crews expected the operation to continue for roughly another half hour, and only part of one floor remained standing.

Aamulehti added that the police are investigating the fire as aggravated property damage, and that one person was taken into custody. Detective Chief Inspector Sami Suhonen said investigators consider natural ignition unlikely because the unoccupied house had been disconnected from the electricity supply. A neighbour made the emergency call. Smoke drifted into the surrounding area, and no one was injured; the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
