VR to Remove Station Ticket Machines After November as Use Drops to 2%
VR will remove station ticket machines after November because they account for only about 2% of sales; paper 10-ride regional tickets will stop being sold from machines and R-kiosks on 30 November.
Passengers will no longer be able to buy VR tickets from station machines after the end of November, since the devices account for only about 2 percent of sales, Tamperelainen reported.
VR says the machines are being retired as they reach the end of their technical life, and spare-part shortages have forced the removal of some units. "We have already had to remove machines as faults have occurred and spare parts are hard to obtain. Investing in a new system is not profitable because 96 percent of tickets are bought digitally. We focus on developing the channels our customers use," Marika Schugk, VR's long-distance sales and pricing director, said in a statement.
Sales of paper 10-ride regional tickets will end on 30 November; the physical multi-ride passes have been available from machines and R-kiosks. Other purchase options remain: vr.fi, the VR Matkalla app, R-kiosks, customer service points, or, when necessary, buying on long-distance trains.
