Yle May Leave Tohloppi by 2032, Reviving TV2 Battle

Yleisradio (Yle) says it may leave its Tohloppi facilities by 2032, either relocating elsewhere in Tampere or abandoning the site.

A column in Aamulehti revisits Tampere’s 1960s campaign to secure TV2 and the Tohloppi television centre. City manager Erkki Napoleon Lindfors and his young city secretary Pekka Paavola led a determined effort. Paavola’s bold offer and Antti Tähtinen’s 1968 building plans won a narrow 4–3 board vote, handing the state project to Tampere.

The column recounts frantic travel to Helsinki, sauna meetings and hard bargaining. It argues that TV2 once offered a distinct, down-to-earth alternative with shows such as Heikki and Kaija, Ajankohtainen kakkonen, Tankki täyteen, Reinikainen, Pikku Kakkonen and Kummeli. The writer says the channel's character has been diluted since TV2 was absorbed into the larger Yle structure.
