City to launch superbus service on major Tampere lines

City of Tampere announced that a new 'superbus' service will begin on lines 7 and 8 in Tampere on August 7, 2028, aiming to combine tram-style efficiency with bus mobility. The project is designed to merge the smoothness of tram operation with flexible bus service to improve urban travel. Line 7 superbus service will be procured via an open competitive tender, while Line 8 will be procured by Tampereen Kaupunkiliikenne Oy through an internal subsidiary process. Both lines’ service contracts are planned to be signed in autumn 2026, marking a major step in the city’s plan to upgrade public transport. To enable the rollout, Tampereen Kaupunkiliikenne Oy will enter a preliminary agreement that serves as a commitment to procuring superbus services. The preliminary agreement confirms the buyer’s intent to sign a procurement contract for Line 8 with Tampereen Kaupunkiliikenne Oy within 2026, aligning procurement timelines across lines. The agreement also specifies that Line 4 (West Hervanta – Central Tampere – Tesoma – Hiedanranta) will transfer to Tampereen Kaupunkiliikenne Oy, with a goal to convert Line 4 into superbus service during the 2030s. The plan envisions a unified, tram-like experience across the new superbus network while coordinating with existing services.
